Over 50 Trains Delayed, Flights Ops Hit In Delhi As Dense Fog Reduces Visibility
Severe fog blanketed Delhi on Saturday morning, leading to major dislocation of train and flight operations. In some areas of the city, visibility was reduced to zero, hindering transportation services. Rail officials claimed that over 50 trains were delayed at important national railway stations like New Delhi Railway Station, AnandVihar Terminus and HazratNizamuddin Station. Several trains, notably the Howrah-New Delhi Duronto Express, Mahabodhi Express, Lucknow Mail, and the Kathgodam Express, suffered with bad visibility.
Flight operations were disrupted as well. Over 150 flights were delayed, and roughly 30 flights were cancelled on Saturday morning. As the Delhi flight delays continued to trouble passengers, authorities asked them to be in touch with their respective airlines for further updates. New Delhi Airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, came up with advisories on Friday, saying visibility in Delhi and other areas of Northern India is hampered by the thick fog. Passengers are requested to plan their journey accordingly, the airport authorities said.
An orange alert was issued for Delhi by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), informing the citizens about very dense fog engulfing the city. Early in the morning, the temperature fell to 10.2 degrees Celsius, in contrast to 9.6 degrees Celsius recorded on the day before. Extreme cold combined with low visibility also made an already bad situation even worse for drivers.
The weather conditions also spiked air pollution in Delhi. To tackle the pollution crisis, the Delhi-NCR region saw a reintroduction of Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). These steps will help mitigate the effects of increasing pollution due to the ongoing adverse weather in Delhi.
Delhi train delays, flight disruptions, and worsening air quality were some of the factors that left the residents of the capital in distress. The thick fog is predicted to stay, and authorities have asked citizens to stay careful while travelling.
